The second time, I wrote an angry epistle to anyone that ever recommended it generally explaining why I felt the writing, plot line, and overall depth of the book was mediocre. The third time I read it, I fell deeply in love; I started to think about, and feel, what it really meant to publish a book like this in 1958 (at a time when less than a handful of African nations were independent).
