Ten Things to Practice with Babies & Toddlers
Stuck at home? Here are some things you can practice that will make life a little easier: 1️⃣ Rolling: Once babies know how to roll both ways, you don’t have to go flip them over again. This is especially helpful at night, though the development spurt of rolling itself often causes sleep setbacks as the babe practices the new skill. But after the skill is developed, many babies sleep more comfortably being able to change positions on their own. 2️⃣ Holding Bottles: Liberating! Especially with twins and multiples, whose parents now have shoulder muscles of steel. 3️⃣ Pincer Grasp: Once baby can use their pincer grasp, they can pick up smaller foods. Like Cheerios. Need we say more? 4️⃣ Straw Cup: Don’t wait too long to teach this as it saves on so much mess and makes eating out a lot
How to Start Solid Food For Babies | Baby-Led Weaning
Introducing food to your baby is exciting…and scary! On one hand, there are new flavors and textures to explore. A world of adventure awaits! On the other hand, you might feel worried about gagging and choking. It is widely accepted that healthy, full-term babies are developmentally ready to start eating solid food around 6 months old. Unfortunately, though, there is a fair amount of conflicting guidance as to how to start your baby on solids. This is why we built Solid Starts. Visit our website to learn how to get started and troubleshoot any issue along the way. And be sure to check out our free First Foods® database to find everything you need to know about introducing real food to your baby. #SolidStarts #FingerFoodFirst #babyledweaning #babyledfeeding #babyled #babyfood #firs
How to Introduce Edamame to Babies
Edamame may be introduced as soon as your baby is ready to start solids, which is generally around 6 months of age. Edamame is round and firm, two qualities that can greatly increase the risk of choking. To reduce the risk, halve each bean by pressing them between your thumb and finger or by pressing with the back of a fork. Alternatively, blend them into a smooth paste, picking out any skins as you go. ➡️ 6 to 9 months old: Boil or steam edamame, remove the beans from the pods, and blend in a food processor until smooth to make a hummus-like spread. Explore mixing in heart-healthy oils such as avocado oil, olive oil, or sunflower oil. Serve edamame spread on its own on a pre-loaded spoon or spread on a thin rice cake. You can also try blending cooked edamame with a little breast mil
How to Cut Cheese for Babies & Toddlers
The second biggest mistake we see parents making is how they cut cheese for their baby and we want to go on the record to challenge the matchstick (aka french fry) cut that you commonly see other professionals recommending. Here’s why: The size of a baby or child’s windpipe is about that of a drinking straw in diameter. Foods that could get stuck in a straw, form a seal over it, or block its opening are choking risks. When it comes to cheese, the main risk is a chunk of cheese breaking off before it is chewed. Which can happen quite easily with the matchstick cut. In our opinion and experience, a super thin and flat piece of cheese is far safer than a matchstick cut or small cube, both of which could more easily get stuck in a straw. And shredded cheese is even safer. But the flat

Why Finger Food First?
The approach to introducing solid foods to babies that we advocate for here—Finger Food First—is based on a method called “baby-led weaning.” Finger Food First is exactly what it sounds like: making it a priority to offer your baby foods that can be eaten with their fingers before other types of food. The priority is to let your baby handle food the way nature intended it: with their fingers. Read more...

Baby-led Weaning Tips | Pause, Observe & Describe
➡️ Pause & Observe. Rather than interrupting the moment, hold your praise. It can be more effective after the meal. ➡️ Connect & Describe. After the meal, find a moment to describe what you saw: “I saw you eat broccoli, just like me. I love sharing meals with you.” ➡️Praise the Value. Focus your praise on specific values. “You weren’t sure about that food, but you tasted it! It’s brave to try new things.” ➡️Praise the Skill. “Nice scoop!”

Baby-led Weaning Tips & Tricks | Food Throwing
It's a universal problem. The 6-month-old dropping food to test gravity. The 9-month-old who takes a single bite and tosses the rest. The 12-month-old throws a piece of food across the table to see what happens — Does it roll? Splat? Make a sound?! And of course, there are the toddlers who throw food just to get a rise out of you. The good news: You can minimize food throwing by coaching your child and controlling your reaction. Read on to see how. xo

Olives are so much fun! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ➡️6 to 12 mos: Try holding off on serving with regularity until after the first birthday due to high sodium levels. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ➡️12 - 18 mos: Pitted olives sliced into rings are fun & fantastic for working on fine motor skills! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ➡️18 to 24 mos: A whole, pitted olive can be stuck on a fingertip to play a make-believe game. While whole olives are a choking hazard, the benefits of learning to work with a whole olive in the mouth are tremendous. ⠀⠀
