This classic women's overcoat style has its roots in equestrian wear, and, indeed, the word "redingote" is a French pronunciation of the word "riding coat". But what the redingote signifies most of all is a coat that is long, with a highly fitted bodice and a very full skirt that allows for virtually any type of movement. A cut like this is not only perfectly stylish in almost any fall or winter setting, but is also the epitome of comfortable luxury. During the Victorian era, women's coats were also highly influenced by military equestrian fashions, and the collar of this coat, as well as the many buttons, reflects this look. The fabric, on the other hand, is a soft merino wool birdseye tweed that is both warm and utterly durable and long lasting.
