There are many different types of braids in the universe. My favourite has to be the waterfall. The braid part of a waterfall braid is at the top in sort of a crowning type way and either pinned at the sides or braided down the middle of the hair. Another one I think looks awesome is the side pony. It is just a simple braid going from one side the other and ending it with a side pony tail.
