Jesus paid for our sins in the sense that he took our sins upon himself and died with them. He took our place and made a legal payment according to the law. Payments are made to legal debts. We incure a legal debt to God when we sin because sin is breaking the law of God (1John3:4)

In the early days of this dispensation, the Lord told His Saints, “Teach ye diligently and my grace shall attend you, that you may be instructed more perfectly in theory, in principle, in doctrine, in the law of the gospel, in all things that pertain unto the kingdom of God, that are expedient for you to understand” (D&C 88:78; emphasis added).
