Arkansas officially designated the graceful white-tailed deer as state mammal in 1993. An animal of incredible beauty and power, white-tailed deer are able to run up to 40 miles per hour, jump 9 foot fences, and swim 13 miles per hour. The white underside of the deer's tail waves when running and is flashed as a warning when danger is sensed. Fawns are born with white spots for camouflage. Both native Americans and settlers relied on the white-tailed deer for buckskin and food.

Albino Deer or White Deer are White-tailed Deer and are quite rare in Northern Wisconsin. There are only 200 to 300 Albinos in the entire state of Wisconsin. We are very lucky to live near a State Forest and lots of private land. Albinos are protected in Northern Wisconsin and cannot be hunted. A "piebald" deer was seen in Beaver Forest Thursday morning. Here's a definition from buckmaster.com: "A piebald is an animal, usually a mammal such as a white-tailed deer or horse, that has a spotting pattern of large white and black patches. The color of a piebald’s skin underneath its coat may vary between black (under the black patches of hair) and pink (under the white patches). "The coloring is generally asymmetrical, resulting in deer with abnormally wild brown and white coloration.
