This is a map of what Africa's colonies looked like in 1914 during Europe's scramble for Africa. Countries in your wanted to colonize Africa so that they could take its natural resources. The colonies merged ethnic and religious groups that didn't like each other and because the colonies influenced the current borders of these countries this is still an ongoing conflict.
In 1870, only 10 percent of Africa was under European control. By 1914 it had risen to almost 90 percent of the continent, with only Ethiopia (Abyssinia), the Dervish state (present-day Somalia), and Liberia still being independent.
