"Barbie" movie soundtrack, 2023.
The movie became one of the most successful summer blockbusters in movie history - $1.44 billion at the box office, making executive producer/co-writer/director Greta Gerwig the first woman to have a movie over that amount. "Barbie" earned a total of eight Academy Award nominations (including one for Best Picture) but snubbed Margot Robbie for Best Actress and Gerwig for Best Director.

The idea of a live-action Barbie film had been in development at Cannon Films in the mid-1980s. At one point, Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway were in line to become Barbie before the rights to the character expired. When Mattel raised the idea of the movie again, they partnered with Robbie who pitched it to the studios. When they got the green light, Margot immediately reached out to Gerwig on the screenplay and directing the movie.

Gerwig was nominated for her work in "Little Women" for Best Adapted Screenplay.  It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress (Saoirse Ronan), Best Supporting Actress (Florence Pugh), Best Original Score (Alexandre Desplat), and Best Costume Design (Jacqueline Durran).

The remake of this movie began in Hollywood in 2013 and was languishing in development for years. Then in August, 2016, Gerwig was hired to write the screenplay and when she heard there was no director for the project, she pitched herself as a writer/director. Her version of the Louisa May Alcott story was "the ambition and the dreams that you have as a girl" and how they "get stomped out of you as you grow up".

The couple had their first child in 2019 and would welcome their second child in February 2023. That December, Baumbach and Gerwig walked to City Hall in NYC and got married.

Written/directed by Wes Anderson. Greta Gerwig voiced the role of Tracy Walker (center right), a pro-dog animal activist trying to end the situation humanely.

The movie consensus at Rotten Tomatoes sums it up: "'Lady Bird' delivers fresh insights about the turmoil of adolescence and reveals debuting writer-director Greta Gerwig as a fully formed filmmaking talent." Made for $10 million, the movie earned $79 million and earned scores of award nominations.

L to R: Writer/director Greta Gerwig, Saorise Ronan, Laurie Metcalf. Gerwig met Ronan at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and read through the script in a hotel room. By the second page, Greta realized that Saoirse was the right choice for the title role. Metcalf was chosen thanks to her performance in the Broadway production of the Stephen King novel "Misery" (opposite Bruce Willis!). At the beginning of the production, Gerwig gave the cast and crew her old high-school yearbooks, photos, and journals, as well as passages written by Joan Didion, and she took them on a tour of her hometown.

Gerwig spent years writing the screenplay - at one point, it was over 350 pages long and had the working title "Mothers and Daughters". In 2015, Gerwig and her team secured financing to make the movie.

This film with four different stories involving the dog star an ensemble cast: Ellen Burstyn, Kieran Culkin, Julie Delpy, Danny DeVito, Ari Graynor, Tracy Letts, and Zosia Mamet. Brie Larson was also in the movie but her character was edited from the film.
