Michael Ondaatje was born in Sri Lanka and became a Canadian Citizen in 1965. He won the 1992 Governor General Fiction book award for the book called, The English Patient. This book is part of the 1983-1996 Challenging Canadian Identity time period, although the story happens during World War II.

After his graduation in 1961, his mother takes him to Vienna where he writes his first novella. His mother, too, starts writing, - her autobiography. She becomes an iconic feminist; he struggles with marriage, family. Great read.
