Global Design Graduate Show 2020

As a response to the end of year show cancellations, ARTSTHREAD and i-D in collaboration with Gucci, launched the first ever online Global Design Graduate Show initiative for all of the students graduating in 2020. The competition was open to all art & design students graduating in year 2019-20 (undergraduate and postgraduate) in any related creative discipline, located anywhere in the world. 4482 students uploaded their end of year projects.

Re-foresting, Simon Feather, graduate 2020 Leeds Beckett University, Architecture MArch My Project ‘Re-foresting’ is a set of nine productive model villages located along the M62, and within the ‘Northern Forest’. Each village uses the environmental conditions associated with their unique location to grow a different selection of tree species. The harvested materials are used to manufacture the villages’ future timber buildings.’

Present, Matthew Choy, Architectural Studies, Chinese University of Hong Kong My final year project is a sports center located in Sau Kei Wan, a small residential district in Hong Kong. The site itself is originally a disused quarry, where the excavation of minerals left behind a sheer cliff and a flat piece of land hidden away from plain sight. The design tries to minimize the footprint of the sports center so that the secluded site could be transformed into a park with tranquility..

The Urban Street Theatre: [dancehall] Culture + City, Shanique Brown, Architecture MA, Caribbean School of Architecture Dancehall is Jamaica’s premiere street ‘theatre.’ It is an urban drama, a mature social movement that originated over fifty years ago. This nocturnal phenomenon, emerged from the streets, the cracks, and margins, as it depicts the people’s survival story against forces of imperialism and systems of exclusion. It has materialized in a variety of distinct street dance events.

Where The Orchids Grow, Stephen Bunn, Animation BA Hons, London College of Communication UAL A world based in the future where human activity has caused mutation and human life to go extinct. The woman Vidakna is the protector of the forest and summons a golem to follow her life lessons in order to take over her role as she has not got long to live. As she travels through the forest, flashbacks of her daughter interact with her and the golems journey.
